There is some talk on the errata-collection page of the wiki about
taking a look at that rule again before releasing the paperback
version, and rescinding it, thus allowing piloting to work like every
other skill-board skill.
I have no idea if that actually happened.
I know *I* run it so that piloting either augments or restricts
V-Shift (depending on whether it's better or worse) because
1) that's how Gunnery works
2) being the pilot of a space ship is supposed to actually be cool, and
3) as written, a piloting character functions as nothing more than a
null-value or a dead weight, and that's not fun or cool.
That said, I also let character's tag their personal aspects in ship
combat, provided their use their ship's fate points to do so. I may
not be the most shining example of textbook play.
